Lets start with Smoke signals. This works in a limited visual range and calm winds. Not affective for international communications. Phone calls can be helpful in some situations but let's face it, are you going to call your entire contact list and how long will they keep taking your calls? Letters. Mailings are nice and are great for reuse in recycled paper pulp. It is hard to read it at that point. Considering the cost it's something you might want to experiment with later in your marketing endeavor.
Email. The modern day letter without the hassle of recycling. Easy to search for. It's strength is also it's weakness in all the junk mail (spam) we get. RSS. Stands for Real Simple Syndication. RSS feeds can be subscribed to and 'read'. Links within RSS go directly to the original article page. RSS like email uses a special client reader but is built into many browsers and email clients. Email fits better with an Internet marketing campaign then RSS. RSS can be combined as a feature to your emailings but as a standalone means of communicating it's not in the mainstream.
